About the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program

Stress exists. Often the demands in our life seem greater than our inner and outer resources for coping. Sometimes the way we react to stress creates more stress. Since our reaction to stress is usually automatic, we feel like we have no control.

We may not be able to control our stressors but we can definitely control our reactions to stress. By becoming aware or mindful, we become more fully present in each moment. This awareness gives us the choice - to do what we have always done or to find a better way of responding to stress.

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program is eight weeks of intensive training in mindfulness techniques such as yoga and meditation. You are asked to practice these techniques at home for 45 minutes every day with audio tapes. You are also encouraged to develop an informal practice by bringing the skill of mindfulness to all the moments of your day such as during routine activities at home, at work, while interacting with others and especially when you are stressed.

Mindfulness practice helps you to see clearly with a broader perspective and helps you to connect with your own deep inner resources for coping.

Background

Founded by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979, the Stress Reduction Clinic has been featured in the Bill Moyer’s’ PBS documentary Healing and the Mind, on NBC Dateline, on ABC’s Chronicle and in various national print media and is the subject of Kabat-Zinn’s best-selling book, Full Catastrophe Living and Saki Santorelli’s Heal Thy Self.
